Playing or recording covers can be a very challenging and creative thing. A lot of artists manage to add a new dimension to the song. Though it's always a good thing to listen to the original, sometimes the cover ends up being the definite or the better version. Here are ten examples where I think that the cover beats the original. I'm not saying the originals are crap (there are in a few cases) but I'm dead serious about each one and I'm happy to argue. Let me what you think. The artist in brackets is the original performer.
01. Marvin Gaye - I heard it through the Grapevine (Gladys Knight and The Pips)
02. The Specials - A Message to You Rudy (Danny Livingstone)
03. Elvis Costello - What's so Funny about Peace, Love and Understanding (Brinsley Schwarz)
04. Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails)
05. Aretha Franklin - I Say a Little Prayer (Dionne Warwick)
06. Paul Young - Wherever I Lay my Hat (Marvin Gaye)
07. Them - It's all Over Now Baby Blue (Bob Dylan)
08. Elvis Presley - Hound Dog (Big Mama Thornton)
09. The Rolling Stones - I just wanna Make Love to You (Muddy Waters)
10. Harry Nielsson - Without You (Badfinger)
Since The Killers among others are shamelessly ripping his songs off, Bruce Springsteen suddenly seems to be cool again for people who didn't have a clue beforehand and probably still don't really have a clue now. As far as those morons who still think Springsteen is just a screaming, bandanna wearing sweaty american patriot: Check your pulse. You might not just lack any basic understanding of music and rock'n'roll you might even be short of blood running through your veins. Here are my 10 favourite songs of The Boss
01. Thunder Road
02. Born to Run
03. It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City
